Rice Protein Ties with Whey for Performance

TAMPA, Fla.In a new study published in Nutrition Journal, scientists established rice protein is as effective as whey protein in improving body composition and exercise performance.

Led by researchers at The University of Tampa, the trial studied 24 college-aged, resistance-trained men who consumed either 48 g of rice (as Oryzatein® from Axiom Foods) or whey protein isolate on training days immediately after exercise (Nutrition Journal 2013, 12:86). Subjects recorded perceived recovery, soreness and readiness to train, while scientists measured muscle thickness, body composition, bench press and leg press strength at baseline and weeks four and eight.

According to the researchers, "Significant time effects were observed in which lean body mass, muscle mass, strength and power all increased and fat mass decreased." However, there were no differences in results between rice and whey protein isolate, so researchers assert the two protein sources are comparable.

The trend of plant-based protein is an emerging one. Both vegetarian and carnivorous consumers alike are turning to alternative protein sources such as rice, pea and super greens. Learn more about the growing market for green protein in the feature "Protein Powers: New Product Innovation."
