BumbleBar Recalls Bars for Unlabeled Dairy

VASHON, Wash.--BumbleBar Inc. (www.bumblebar.com), based here, voluntarily recalled its vegan and "organic energy" Chocolate Crisp BumbleBars because they contained milk, an ingredient that is not vegan or listed on the label as a potential allergen. The recall affected 86 cases, approximately 16,000 bars.

The company issued the recall after finding that milk chocolate had been used in the bars, made between March 31 and July 25, 2001. According to a company spokesperson, it manufactured new bars last week using dairy-free chocolate and is in the process of trading out the recalled bars for the new ones.

These bars were distributed in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Indiana and Washington; to date, there have been no illnesses reported. Consumers can call (800) 964-4832 for more information.

Earlier this summer, the Food Allergy Issues Alliance presented proposed new labeling guidelines for manufacturers producing products that contain possible allergens such as peanuts and soy. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it welcomed these standards, adding that this was a "significant" step in the right direction for food labeling.
