Alaska Salmon Fishery Eligible for MSC Label

ANCHORAGE, Alaska--The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) announced in early September that Alaska Salmon Fishery (managed by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game) is the first U.S. fishery to be certified as sustainable. It is now eligible to bear the MSC label.

The MSC program is based on three principles: that the fish have not been"overfished" [depleting the fish supply or killing other species while fishing]; that the fishery operates in a manner that supports the marine ecosystem; and that the fishery must respect local, national and international laws supporting sustainable fishing.
