Pharmachem Releases Preliminary Results on Phase2 Study

KEARNY, N.J.--Preliminary results from a studysponsored by Pharmachem Laboratories showed that patients taking a concentratedstarch neutralizer extracted from the white kidney bean lost, on average, a halfa pound per week (2 pounds over four weeks) compared to those on placebo (0.1pound over four weeks). Also, patients on the starch neutralizer (Phase2)lost 1.3 inches around their waists, compared to no loss for those on placebo. The eight-week study is still underway at Northridge Hospital Medical Center inLos Angeles.

"Besides weight loss, the study is designed to determinethe impact of the starch neutralizer on glucose control and cholesterol,"said Jay Udani, M.D., medical director of the Integrative Medical Program atNorthridge and chief researcher on the study. "If we can control theabsorption of starch calories, which are converted to sugar in the body, we maybe able to reduce blood glucose levels in diabetics."

Other preliminary study data showed patients on Phase2 hadsignificantly improved blood glucose levels and insulin production, and loweredtriglycerides (down to 145 from 152). The patients also had increased appetitecontrol, increased energy and decreased hunger. Pharmachem Laboratories (www.pharmachemlabs.com)supplied the Phase2 for the study and anticipates final results by early 2003.
