AICR Releases Brochure Promoting Healthy Weight

WASHINGTON--The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR)announced The New American Plate: Veggies, a brochure that offers recipesfor promoting a healthy weight and way of life. According to AICR, neither fatnor carbs is the culprit behind becoming overweight or obese but the number ofcalories being consumed. "If you want to lose weight and stay healthy, youhave to eat less and exercise more, not simply cut whole categories of food outof your diet," said Melanie Polk, R.D., director of nutrition education atAICR. Polk added, "People who respond to the many recent articlesexonerating fat and indicating carbohydrates by switching to a high-protein andhigh-fat diet are doing long-term damage to their health." She suggestedthat abandoning carbohydrates for a high-protein diet makes little sense;rather, people should eat fewer refined carbohydrates and more whole grains, vegetables, fruits and beans that do not spike insulin levels. AICR's newbrochure can be read or ordered online (www.aicr.org).
