Vermont Soapworks Offers Organic Private Label Service

MIDDLEBURY, Vt.--Vermont Soapworks was certified by theNortheast Organic Farmers Association (NOFA) as an organic processing facility, allowing the company to offer private label manufacturing services of coldprocess bar soaps, liquid soaps and specialty cleaners. The company (www.vermontsoap.com)noted the current National Organic Program (NOP) standards are geared towardfood manufacturing, and that it is working to ensure specific guidelinesgoverning use of the term "organic" in the personal care industry areimplemented.

To help in the process, Vermont Soapworks is supporting the Organic ConsumersAssociation's (OCA) "Coming Clean" campaign. OCA is targeting aloophole that allows hydrosol, a non-agricultural water used in steamdistillation, to be listed as "organic hydrosol" because it is water.According to OCA (www.organicconsumers.org),this allows companies to inflate the weight of organic ingredients in productsto meet the 70-percent minimum for an organic label claim.
