TEMPE, Ariz.--The Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine(www.scnm.edu) and Gaia Herbs (www.gaiaherbs.com), based in Brevard, N.C., were awarded a major research grant from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine(NCCAM) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study the quality, bioavailability and effectiveness of standardized echinacea extracts. The grant provides funding for two phases of research. Phase I will focus on selecting different species of Echinacea and testing for several characteristics. Phase II will focus on bioavailability of selected standardized products developed in Phase I.
