Founded in 1907 as Masseys, by Otis Kleine and Richard Massey, the company provided aromas for the cleaning industry. Under the shared leadership of Richard Massey and Chatfield Nielsen Sr., the company became Vanilla Specialists, offering a variety of vanillas and flavors to primarily food manufacturers. Chatfield Nielsen Sr. bought out Massey in the 1950s and changed the company name to Nielsen-Massey Vanillas in the 1960s. Once Chatfield Jr. took the lead in the 1970s, the company evolved into Pure Vanilla Specialists, producing only pure vanillas. Since then, the company has developed many innovative vanilla products and flavorings including Pure Vanilla Powder, Pure Vanilla Bean Paste and Certified Organic Vanillas. In the 1990s, Camilla Nielsen managed the company, opening Nielsen-Massey Vanillas International in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, to service customers worldwide. Today, the third generation of owners, Craig, Beth and Matt Nielsen, continue the legacy started by their grandfather by revisiting the companys roots and introducing a new product line of pure flavor extracts.
