If you ask industry professionals for a definition of clean label, you will receive a variety of responses. I think many would agree, however, that the clean label movement is proliferating within the food and beverage industry, and that its increasing momentum is not without its challenges.
Implementing a clean label supply chain isn’t something that can be achieved quickly given the many barriers, including regulatory hurdles, cost, lead times and capacity. It is critical to involve your operations/supply chain team every step along the way, since this growing movement is a bit of a moving target and frequent changes without communication can lead to a breakdown.
Furthermore, the agreed upon definition of clean label between a brand owner and a supplier often results in additional paperwork and documentation, especially if the definition aligns with some of the most common certifications. Obtaining certifications for ingredients and finished products that are organic or Non-GMO Project verified generally takes additional time.
