In 2016, FDA announced its Final Rule requiring both the Nutrition Facts and Supplement Facts boxes on product labels get updated to reflect new scientific information and to help consumers make more informed choices. Most brands have until 2020 until they need to update their labels, but some have already implanted the changes. This has caused confusion among consumers who question why products have different labels. While FDA has a campaign to help educate consumers on the changes to the Nutrition Facts Panel, it doesn’t have a similar program for the Supplement Facts Panel.

In this podcast, Brian Wommack, senior vice president, communications, Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), discusses the update to the Supplement Facts Panel and how brands can help consumers navigate the change. With Sandy Almendarez, editor in chief, INSIDER, Wommack covers:

  • The advances to nutrition science that occurred during the two decades since the last update to the labels

  • How the requirement to disclose bioengineered ingredients plays a role in the confusion about labeling updates.

  • The Label Wise campaign, spearheaded by CRN, which offers resources for supplement brands to help educate consumers.

This podcast was recorded at Natural Products Expo West 2019 in Anaheim, California.
