FDA issued a letter of no objection to Technology Crops International (TCI) for its self-affirmed GRAS (generally recognized as safe) filing for Buglossoides arvensis Ahiflower™ oil. According to TCI, ahiflower oil contains the highest levels of non-genetically modified omega-3 essential fatty acids compared to other available plant oils. Ahiflower oil also has significant levels of gamma linolenic acid (GLA).
“We welcome FDA’s confirmation of Ahiflower oil’s GRAS status," said Greg Cumberford, general manager for TCI’s Ahiflower Division. “This approval is a significant opportunity for nutrition companies to formulate food and beverage products that better serve consumers seeking vegetarian, pleasant tasting, and ecologically sustainable sources of healthy omega fatty acids."
TCI developed ahiflower oil more than 12 years ago to maximize agricultural yields and stearidonic acid (SDA) content. The company uses non-genetically modified plant breeding processes and maintains stringent traceability controls.
