FDA to Consumers: Several Weight Loss Products Contain Sibutramine

WASHINGTON FDA last week warned consumers to steer clear of several weight loss products.

The specific products identified by the food safety agency are Japan Hokkaido Slimming Weight Loss Pills, Beautiful Slim Body and Best Share Green Coffee: Brazilian Slimming Coffee.

FDA revealed its laboratory analysis confirmed all the products contain sibutramine, a controlled substance that was removed from the market two years ago for safety reasons because it is known to substantially increase blood pressure and cause a risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias or stroke. FDA advised consumers to immediately stop using the products and discard them, and the agency encouraged health care professionals and patients to report adverse events or side effects to its MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.

The products are sold on various websites and in some retail stores, according to the agency.

The notifications reflect a growing trend of products being marketed as conventional foods or dietary supplements with concealed chemicals and drugs, FDA said.
