FDA: Basic Foods Aware of Tainted HVP

WASHINGTONThe Wall Street Journal is reporting that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Las Vegas-based Basic Food Flavors, Inc., the company in the crosshairs of one of the largest food recalls in recent U.S. history, continued to make and distribute the flavor enhancer hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) even after it discovered Salmonella present at its processing facility.

The FDA report said the company first learned Salmonella was present at its processing facility for HVP on Jan. 21, 2010. The company continued to distribute the ingredients until Feb. 15, 2010.
