Sports Drink Recalled in Japan

TOKYO--Kirin Beverage Corp. reported that chemical changes occurring with vitamins and amino acids caused at least 10 people to become sick from Kirin Speed sports drink. Company officials said that a chemical reaction occurred in the minerals during a high-temperature sterilization process. So far, 1.36 million cans and bottles of Kirin Speed have been recalled. The company also reported that itsShonan, Japan factory used tap water with a higher mineral content than usual to make the drinks. Production will be suspended at that factory until a system is set up to eliminate the minerals from the tap water. For additional information, visitwww.kirin.co.jp.
