Sesame Seed Extract Benefits Cholesterol, Glucose

BANGALORE, IndiaSesame seed extract may be beneficial in the management of prediabetes and hyperlipidemia, according to new research published in the Journal of Food Research.

The company-funded study investigated the effects of SesaVita (from Olive Lifesciences) using 20 adults with prediabetes and mild-to-moderate hyperlipidemia (J Food Res. 2013; DOI: 10.5539/jfr.v2n5p104). Subjects received either 500 mg SesaVita or placebo daily, in addition to therapeutic lifestyle changes for six weeks.

Researchers found a statistically significant decrease in supplemented patients' low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, total cholesterol, oral glucose tolerance test  and fasting blood sugar levels at weeks three and six.

H. N. Shivaprasad, VP of Olive Lifesciences and author of the clinical study said, Not only is the clinical data on SesaVita impressive, it also works in quite a unique way to reduce elevated blood glucose level and altered lipid profile in subjects who are advised with therapeutic lifestyle changes."
