New Study Shows Intake of Collagen Peptides Leads to Wrinkle Reduction

A new study shows the oral ingestion of collagen peptides (as Verisol from Gelita) lead to a statistically significant reduction of eye wrinkle volume (2013 Dec 24;27(3):113-119). The results were recently published by the University of Kiel, Germany, focusing on the effect of Bioactive Collagen Peptides (BCP) on human skin conditions.

The study was a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, with 114 women between the ages of 45 and 65. There were randomly given 2.5 grams of Verisol or a placebo once daily for eight weeks, with 57 participants in each group.

Wrinkles were objectively measure in all participants before starting the treatment, after four and  eight weeks of starting the treatment and four weeks after the  last intake. A subgroup was established for suction blister biopsies analyzing pro-collagen 1, elastin and fibrillin at the beginning of the treatment and after eight weeks of intake.

After four weeks of treatment, group using Verisol showed a significantly reduce eye wrinkle volume of more than 7.2 percent on average. The reduction of eye wrinkles was more pronounced after eight weeks, by 20.1 percent. A maximum reduction of eye wrinkle volume of 49.9 percent was acheived. Four weeks after the last intake, the participants using Verisol show a decrease in eye wrinkle volume of 11.5 percent. Pro-collagen type I content was increased by 65%, elastin by 18% and fibrillin by 6% after 8 weeks of BCP treatment.
