Kombucha Gaining Mainstream Attention

NEW YORKA recent MSNBC article examined the growing popularity of Kombucha, a tangy, fermented drink made from live bacteria and yeast that some claim provides a boost of energy and improves immunity and digestion.

According to the article, kombucha began in health food stores, but has made its way into the mainstream market as well as the home-brew market. The black and green tea in the drink contains a host of antioxidants, prebiotics and polyphenols; however, reports have linked kombucha with serious complications, including liver damage, toxicity and metabolic acidosis.
