Rachel Adams, managing editor, and Krista Coventry, directory of regulatory services, Eastern Canada, Source Nutraceutical, discuss proposed regulations affecting natural health products (NHPs) in Canada. In 2016, Health Canada introduced proposed self-care framework designed to “modernize” Health Canada’s approach to regulating self-care products, which was followed by request for public comments. In late March, Health Canada published its “What We Heard” report summarizing the comments. In a statement announcing the report, Health Canada officials wrote the organization is “already thinking of ways to improve the initial proposal.”
This podcast interview was recorded at the 17th Annual Oxford International Conference on the Science of Botanicals in Oxford, Mississippi, April 3-6. In April and May, Health Canada hosted public consultation sessions to discuss the proposed self-care framework, and published a summary of the of the sessions in Saskatoon and Vancouver on April 27. Health Canada has encouraged continued feedback on the proposal.
In this episode, Adams and Coventry discuss:
The current system used by Health Canada to regulate NHPs;
How the proposed self-care framework would impact regulation of NHPs; and
Events leading up to the proposed regulations impacting consumer confidence in NHPs.
