DSM, Avril collaborate on plant-based protein

Royal DSM and the international agro-industrial group Avril are collaborating to meet growing consumer demand for plant-based proteins. DSM and Avril will produce a unique protein based on non-GMO canola that has excellent functional properties, a high nutritional value, and a balanced taste profile, making it ideal for a range of applications including meat and dairy alternatives, beverages, baked products, bars and ready-to-mix.

The partners’ plan to develop a state-of-the-art industrial production facility fully dedicated to canola proteins at Avril’s Saipol facility in Dieppe, France. Commercial availability from first production could be as early as end 2021. 

Chobani launches Milk Matters program to support transparency in dairy

Chobani launched the Milk Matters program to further its commitment to its milkshed as well as efforts to support greater transparency across dairy farms. The program, designed to address the unprecedented challenges being faced by today’s dairy industry, will include co-op partners, dairy farms, and third-parties such as Fair Trade USA, the World Wildlife Fund, National Milk Producers Federation, Cornell University, state programs and community foundations in Idaho and New York to validate the continued progress. Milk Matters is working toward 100% implementation by 2025.

Corbion plant in Nebraska earns organic certification

Corbion recently earned organic certification for its plant in Blair, Nebraska, where it manufactures vinegar- and lactic acid-based ingredient products for the food industry. The certification better positions Corbion’s ability to help food manufacturers meet the growing demand for organic food products.

Ardent Mills furthers organic commitment with acquisition of Oregon Elevator

Ardent Mills has further invested in organic capabilities and The Annex by Ardent Mills through its acquisition of a grain elevator in Klamath Falls, Oregon. The elevator, which is near Ardent Mills’ community mill in Stockton, California, and mix plant in Arlington, Oregon, enhances the company’s ability to support growers in the Pacific Northwest, partner with universities on breeding, and serve its overall customer base.

Palsgaard achieves total carbon-neutral production

Palsgaard has reached its goal of total carbon-neutral production two years ahead of schedule, reducing its net carbon emissions from 12,029 tons in 2010 to zero in 2018. Over that period, it has achieved CO2 reductions totaling 56,175 tons. The company’s six global production sites are now all carbon-neutral, mainly through changing sources of energy. Strategies have included new heat recovery and insulation techniques, a switch from heavy fuel oil to certified biogas, and the use of renewables.

At Palsgaard’s main site in Denmark, all electricity is sourced from hydro power, and indoor heating is powered by burning home-grown straw rather than oil. The company’s Dutch factory has more than 800 solar panels and has run off only renewable energy since the beginning of 2018.
