Vital Nutrients Voluntarily Recalls Products Containing Aristolochic Acid

MIDDLETOWN, Conn.--On May 21, Vital Nutrients/RHG & Co. Inc. voluntarilyrecalled some of its dietary supplements that were found to contain aristolochicacid. The products affected were all lot numbers of 30- and 60-ct. VitalNutrients Joint Ease and Verified Quality Joint Comfort Complex. These productshad been distributed nationwide to retail stores, naturopaths, chiropractors andother doctors.

Vital Nutrients initiated the voluntary recall after an independent labcontracted by the company found the aristolochia. The products contained Clematischinensis extract (common name Wei ling xian), which is listed by the Foodand Drug Administration (FDA) (www.fda.gov) ascontaining aristolochic acid. Mark Wynne, vice president of business developmentat Vital Nutrients, stated that that new testing protocols discovered thearistolochia in the companys two products. The company had certificates ofanalysis for the products. We keep meticulous records.
