Americans, along with much of the global population, consume too much sodium. High sodium consumption raises blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke—the first and fourth leading causes of death, respectively, in the United States. As a result, the food and beverage industry is being called upon to reduce sodium across the food supply in an attempt to decrease the negative health effects of high-sodium diets.
