Bio-Botanica Donates Analytical Equipment to High School

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y.—Bio-Botanica donated a supply of analytical equipment to Cold Spring Harbor High School’s research department to potentially improve future achievement in science, technology, engineering and math.

The donated equipment will give students the opportunity for hands-on education. Bio-Botanica hopes this exposure will be the start of many fruitful scientific careers by sparking interest not only in research on botanicals, but in science in general.

The equipment includes a high performance liquid chromatograph with an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometric detector (HPLC-UV-Vis), which can separate and quantify chemical components in complex samples (i.e. botanical extracts); a mass spectrometer, which can determine the molecular weight of chemical constituents helping students identify unseen structures; and a gas chromatograph with mass spectrometer, which is used in a wide range of disciplines from forensics to food science.
