FDA Allows Bovine Small Intestines in Foods, Cosmetics

WASHINGTONAmending the July2004 final rule on Use of Materials Derived from Cattle in Human Food andCosmetics, which is aimed at safeguarding such products from mad cowdisease, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will now allow the use of smallintestines from cows, as new procedures can consistently and effectively removethe distal ileum from the cows digestive tract. The U.S. Department ofAgriculture (USDA) similarly amended its final rule on mad cow disease.

FDA further amended the rule to clarify that milk and milkproducts, hides and hide-derived products, and tallow derivatives are notprohibited for use in human food and cosmetics.
