The Double Burden of Malnutrition

<p>The prevalence of malnutrition in the United States may be surprising to many, but addressing the problem via vitamin and mineral fortification of foods and beverages provides a wealth of opportunities to solve the problem.</p>

The numbers may be surprising: 6 percent of Americans are deficient in vitamin C, 10 percent are deficient in B6 and 90 percent don’t consume enough vitamins E or D. Michael McBurney, Ph.D., FACN, vice president of science, communications & advocacy, DSM Nutritional Products, discusses the issues and looks at how food and beverage fortification can provide solutions to improve public health, as well as opportunities to create successful new products.
