USDA Awards $10.9 Million in Grants for Pest Management

WASHINGTON--The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is issuing $10.9million in grants for pest management programs. According to Secretary ofAgriculture Dan Glickman, the programs will research safe, effective strategiesfor managing destructive farm pests.

The grants were made in four separate areas: newly created Regional PestManagement Centers to provide an information network; research on pestmanagement options for all aspects of crop production; implementation of pestmanagement alternatives for commodities affected by the methyl bromidephase-out; and assessment of pest management options for at-risk crops orcropping systems. Some of the programs include integrated pest managementtechniques, which are often used in organic and sustainable agriculturalsystems. For more information on the grants, visit www.usda.gov.
