WASHINGTON--The March 20 Washington Post ran an article that claimed that an increasing number of Americans are falling ill from taking herbal supplements. The article, written by Guy Gugliotta, turned up in newspapers across the nation this morning.
In the article, the author called out GHB, androstenedione and ephedra as some of the most dangerous "herbs." The author also discussed the "uncontrolled experimentation" on the part of consumers and the issue of "no accountability" on the part of manufacturers.
In addition, the author quoted Prosy Abarquez-Delacruz, regional administrator for the California Health Services Department's Food and Drug Branch. Abarquez-Delacruz compared the supplement industry to the lawless days of the old west. "It's the John Wayne industry, like the wild, wild West," said Abarquez-Delacruz.
Abarquez-Delacruz also added that he thinks 1994's DSHEA act should be called the "Food Fraud Facilitation Act," because, according to him, it allows the supplement industry to do whatever it wants without regulation.
