WASHINGTON—A recent independent laboratory test of eight popular sports nutrition supplements found no steroid or stimulant contamination, according to the Natural Products Association, which conducted the testing as part of its TruLabel program that subjects supplements to regular testing to ensure label and ingredient authenticity and accuracy.

Daniel Fabricant, Ph.D., vice president of scientific affairs, said: “This should give continued confidence to sports dietary supplement users that what’s on the label is what’s in the bottle; nothing more, nothing less. Too often, sports supplements get falsely blamed for being the source of banned substances, which causes unfair confusion about the purity of these products. The TruLabel program and this test confirm that our industry delivers high-quality products, and subjects itself to independent and random testing to prove it.”

Fabricant added testing is available to companies that are not members of the Natural Products Association on an ad hoc basis. Brian Rubino, vice president of Ultimate Nutrition, a member company whose products passed the TruLabel testing, also issued a release urging all manufacturers in the sports nutrition category to have their products tested. “All responsible manufacturers of sports supplements should have proof that their products do not contain banned substances,” he said. “This is an essential component in protecting the integrity of the product category.”
