New Ingredients at Vitafoods Europe from Waitaki Biosciences, ActivInside, KD Pharma

Several companies have announced new ingredients, and some, including Waitaki Biosciences, Activ’Inside and KD Pharma, plan to showcase new ingredients at Vitafoods Europe, Geneva, Switzerland, May 10 -12.

Waitaki Biosciences Launches Three Ingredients

Waitaki Biosciences will showcase three new specialty ingredients at Vitafoods Europe—the result of an expansion project to increase capacity and develop new extraction technologies. The ingredients include:

  • LipernexTM—an omega 3 and phospholipid rich green-shell mussel oil;

  • ActiPhenTM—freeze-dried kiwifruit powder that promotes optimal digestive health; and

  • CassiPureTM—anthocyanin-rich blackcurrant extract for eye health, cognition and immune support.

According to Craig McIntosh, chief executive of Waitaki Biosciences, these ingredients widen “the net where our products have application, providing our customers with a more complete range of health care solutions." He said the company’s product range has traditionally focused on the areas of bone and joint health and inflammation.

New Zealand-grown fruit varieties in particular, from which ActiPhen and CassiPure are derived, offer benefits such as strict non-GMO policies, environmentally sustainable growing practices and, as a consequence of the seasonal hole in the ozone layer, higher than normal levels of protective phytonutrients.

Activ’Inside Launches Memophenol for Memory

Activ’Inside will launch at Vitafoods Europe its synergistic bioavailable solution Memophenol™, clinically demonstrated to enhance cognitive function by improving learning, working memory and long-term memory performance.

Memophenol is composed of French grape (Vitis vinifera) and wild blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) extracts, ingredients with proven beneficial effects on learning and memory impairment. The French proprietary patent-pending ingredient was evaluated in a large-scale, bi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study, performed during a six-month period with more than 200 participants and based on CANTAB tests from Cambridge Cognition (verbal recall memory test and paired associated earning test).

Memophenol has been shown to:

  • Reduce short-term memory loss: Memophenol group forgot 2.5 times less words compared to placebo.

  • Improve long-term memory performances: People taking Memophenol made two times less memory errors after six months of supplementation.

  • Reverse up to 10 years of brain aging: Memophenol group showed a score corresponding to a cognitive age of 50 to 59 years, whereas the mean score of the placebo group was equivalent to people between the ages of 60 to 69 years.

Memophenol's effects result both from a high demonstrated bioavailability of the solution and from a synergistic action; the absorption of raw material metabolites was shown to increase five-fold compared to individual extracts. Further, the solution offers complementary mechanisms of action on brain plasticity, neurogenesis, brain microcirculation and oxidative balance.

Memophenol development is scientifically supported by two new scientific articles and is recommended at 300 mg once or twice daily. Memophenol is suitable for nutraceutical and food applications.

KD Pharma Launches KD Smart™ DHA

KD Pharma will showcase its newly launched KD Smart™ omega-3 oil, developed to provide the same average ratio of omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) found in mother’s milk, at Vitafoods Europe.

DHA is found throughout the body, but most prevalently in the brain and eye retina. Intake of EPA and DHA is critical for both baby and mother during pregnancy and lactation. In the prenatal stage, fatty acids, especially DHA, are in high demand, accumulating in the infant’s brain, the eye retina and throughout the body as a cellular component.

KD Pharma specially formulated KD Smart in the same 1:4 ratio of EPA:DHA found in mother’s milk.

American Lecithin Launches Sunflower-derived Lecithins, Phospholipids

American Lecithin Company (ALC) launched sunflower-derived lecithins and phospholipids, including phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylcholine and glycerophosphocholine. The products will be available under the company’s ALCOLEC® brand of natural emulsifiers.

Randy Zigmont, president of ALC, stated, “With this launch, American Lecithin becomes the only company that offers both sunflower-derived phosphatidylserine (PS) and sunflower-derived glycerophosphocholine (GPC). We anticipate a high level of interest as they are both hypo-allergenic and GMO-free. These are label-friendly options that more and more consumers are looking for, and manufacturers need solutions to meet that demand."

The new additions join the ALC’s existing range of phospholipids derived from egg, soy, canola and sunflower, used in in liposomal and nano-emulsion delivery systems proven to enhance the bioavailability of vitamins and poorly soluble actives.
