Nutrition Capital Network, an organization that connects investors with high-potential growth companies in the nutrition and health and wellness industries, released its annual list of top 20 transactions for 2013. Taken from the NCN transaction database, the list includes mergers and acquisitions and financing in healthy foods, ingredients, nutritional supplements, contract manufacturing, retail and Internet-based platforms and mobile technologies.
Overall, the number of transactions in 2013 compared to 2012 showed sustained interested by the investment community in the industry. The healthy food category had 64 acquisitions in 2013, followed by healthy ingredients with 29 acquisitions. The organic food category had the largest transaction for 2013 when WhiteWave Foods acquired Earthbound Farm for approximately $600 million. The second largest transaction was with FMC Corp. targeting Epax, a European manufacturer of omega-3 fatty acids, for approximately $345 million.
Other categories that saw significant deals in 2013 include healthy food for babies and children; raw, pressed, organic juice companies; online marketplace; and health home delivered meals.
