WASHINGTON--Another group of aristolochic acid-tainted products have been recalled. Ithaca, N.Y.-based Blue Light Inc. has recalled 13 products sold under its "Treasure of the East" label. On June 20, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) (www.fda.gov) posted this recall and the names of the affected products on its Web site.

According to Chao Chang, president of Blue Light (www.treasureofeast.com), the company sold herbs that naturally contained aristolochic acid because the products were based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) methods. However, when FDA issued a warning about the health risk involved with aristolochia last June, the company began to stop distributing these products--in all, 1,213 bottles were recalled. Chang also stated that letters would be sent to its customers today in regard to the official recall.

These products are sold primarily to acupuncturists, herbalists and herbal stores in powder (3.5 oz.) or capsule (100 ct.) form. The affected products are labeled with codes such as "MFG No. 200008" (2000=year, 08=month). Those that were made in September 2000 or later do not contain aristolochia.

No illnesses have been reported, but consumers who have bought affected product can return it to its place of purchase for a full refund. Any questions can be directed to the company at (888) 258-3548.
