Mind of the Consumer Research Outlines Market Opportunities
Ingredient Marketplace is focused on the Mind of the Consumer, as understanding what consumers are demand drives product ideation and market success. Results of the inaugural Mind of the Consumer research study, conducted by Natural Marketing Institute (NMI) with Informa Exhibitions, showcased whitespace areas in six key categories: probiotics, sports nutrition, omega-3s, weight management, digestive health and protein.
Expo Hall Attracts Interested Crowds
This year’s Ingredient Marketplace had nearly 2,300 participants, with a great deal of business being done in the expo hall. Attendees took the time to discover new ingredients and services, as exhibitors engaged in meaningful conversations about the benefits of their offerings.
Expanded Interest in Healthy Ingredients Seen in Expo
Greater interest in key categories and new applications for ingredients was seen throughout the expo hall. This year’s event had four official category sponsors including Welch’s (seen here) as the Official Antioxidant Sponsor, FloraGLO Lutein as Official Eye Health Sponsor, Gelita as the Official Collagen Protein Sponsor, and Sabinsa as the Official Curcumin Sponsor.
Expo Hall Programming Delivers Content in Context
The Ingredient Marketplace stage in the expo hall offered a variety of quick programming designed to highlight market opportunities, and was a draw for attendees and exhibitors alike. Sessions included Technology & Transparency in Supply Chain Sourcing, sponsored by IngredientsOnline.com; Trends In Sports Nutrition with market insights from Euromonitor and Mintel; and Storefronts Live, showcasing solutions around Healthy Aging and Well-Being from Gelita, Gencor, Bioenergy Ribose and Top Health Ingredients.
Self-Regulatory Efforts Take Center Stage
Also at the Ingredient Marketplace stage was a panel discussion on industry self-regulatory efforts, and how those efforts will address consumer confidence. Panelists included (from left) Guru Ramanathan, Ph.D., chief innovation officer, GNC; Christine Burdick-Bell, vice president and general counsel, Pharmavite; and Steve Mister, president/CEO, Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN). Among the topics were the proposed product registry being championed by CRN through its foundation, and a focus on botanical supply chain identity and testing, which has been a priority for the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA).
Exploring Consumer Desires, Expectations in Probiotics
The full day Probiotics Marketplace event covered issues including ingredient selection, formulation considerations and the latest research into probiotics and the microbiome. The event kicked off with a keynote presentation by Dietitian Cassie about consumers’ perceptions of probiotics and how she and other health professionals are educating consumers about the health effects and guiding them on selecting efficacious products. In a panel discussion, Dietitian Cassie (left) was joined by Nena Dockery from premier sponsor Stratum Nutrition and industry consultant Peter Leighton.
Probiotics Marketplace Fosters Connections
During the full-day Probiotics Marketplace, participants had the opportunity to network with speakers and sponsors, including chatting directly with the sponsors showcasing scientific research in poster presentations. In addition to Stratum Nutrition as premier sponsor, additional Probiotics Marketplace sponsors included Arka Probiotics, BIO-CAT Microbials, Nutraceutix, Prenexus Health, Sabinsa, Unique Biotech and Viva 5 Corp. The event was produced with the International Probiotics Association (IPA).
Dr. Mike Shares Thoughts on the Mind of the Sports Enthusiast
Mike Roussell, known as the “Diet Doctor”, gave the Thursday morning keynote presentation around the mind of the sports enthusiast, talking through how industry can close the gap and deliver products that meet expectations. Among his suggestions were an emphasis on quality, including the importance of certifications and key messaging; formulation that offers convenience and efficacy; and the need to explore new product categories including sleep, stress management and digestive support.
Reverse Happy Hour Draws the Night-time Crowd
While the venue moved inside due to chance of rain, the enthusiasm was undampened, as the Ingredient Marketplace Reverse Happy Hour, sponsored by Gelita, drew a crowd that was looking to continue the networking and relationship building.
