Once upon a time, probiotics were the only “-biotic” that ruled the healthy CPG (consumer packaged good) landscape. As consumer understanding and research findings grew, other -biotic categories formed with their own research supporting human and animal health. Some, such as prebiotics and synbiotics, are gaining consumer traction, but others, such as postbiotics and psychobiotics are still gaining their footing. And CBD-biotics? Is that a thing? (No, it’s not.)

In this podcast Ivan Wasserman, managing partner, Amin Talati Upadhye LLP, discusses the growth of these -biotics in the marketplace and the regulatory challenges they face. With Sandy Almendarez, editor in chief, INSIDER, Wasserman covers:

  • The definitions of prebiotics, synbiotics, psychobiotics, cosmecbiotics and postbiotics.

  • The industry’s efforts to change regulatory requirements so probiotics can be labelled by colony forming units (CFUs) rather than by weight.

  • How brands may inadvertently mislead consumers by using these new -biotic terms
