Value-driven companies are creating food and beverage products that align with their goals and mission, but are struggling to allocate packaging that also aligns with values. Rachel Adams, managing editor, and Lara Dickinson, executive director at OSC2, cofounder at Climate Collaborative and partner at Pluot Consulting, discuss the challenges related to development and adoption of sustainable, flexible food packaging and the industry’s first compostable flexible packaging at Natural Products Expo West 2018 in Anaheim, California, March 7-11.

Key points of this podcast include:

  • Silos don’t work when it comes to sustainability at large; collaboration is needed to create and drive impactful, scalable solutions—including packaging solutions.

  • Developers have made progress in the area of sustainable, recyclable rigid packaging—and there’s an infrastructure in place to capture it.

  • The painpoint of sustainable packaging is in the area of flexible packaging, which contains or holds the actual product. This is largely because there is no infrastructure for recycling flexible packaging. As a result, the first sustainable form of flexible packaging—and possibly the future of flexible packaging—is compostable.

  • Cost is a primary barrier to sustainable packaging, but can be overcome by considering factors such as distribution method and labeling, among others.
