Coleus Forskohlii Extract Halts Weight Gain in Rats

BANGALORE, India—Coleus forskohlii extract (CFE) suppressed diet-induced weight gain and food intake in rats, new research in Pharmacognosy Research suggests. Conducted at the Sree Siddaganga College of Pharmacy, India, Olive Lifesciences pharmacology researchers divided 30 rats into five groups: normal pellet diet group; cafeteria diet group; cafeteria diet followed by 50 mg/kg/d CFE, 100 mg/kg/d CFE and 45 mg/kg/d orlistat (Phcog Res. DOI: 10.4103/0974-8490.122916). Scientists then measured food intake, body weight and serum lipid profile alteration.

"CFE significantly halted increase in food intake and weight gain associated with cafeteria diet," researchers said, noting dyslipidemia development was also significantly inhibited.

“Indicators such as food intake, body weight and alteration in serum lipid profiles were studied and observed effects validate that, supplementation of coleus extract with cafeteria diet could curb the appetite and supports in weight management," said Shiva Prasad, Ph.D., researcher and VP of Olive Lifesciences.
