Vermont Cautions McDonald’s Over Maple Claims

MONTPELIER, Vt.—Vermont’s Agency of Agriculture is taking aim at McDonald’s newly introduced Fruit & Maple Oatmeal arguing the new breakfast menu item contains maple flavoring instead of actual maple syrup the Vermont is know for producing.
Vermont’s so-called maple laws require any product that claims to be a natural maple product to use actual maple syrup. According to WCAX News, agriculture officials contacted McDonald's to inform the company that it must no longer use "maple" in the oatmeal's name.
"We have communicated to McDonald's that in order for them to be in compliance with the product, because we want them to do the right thing, they have to change the ingredients and labeling and we hope they do that," said former Vt. Agriculture Secretary Roger Allbee. "We'll give them 60 to 90 days, certainly that's appropriate.
The fast-food giant responded to WCAX News with the following statement: "McDonald's Fruit & Maple Oatmeal contains oatmeal, diced apples, cranberries, raisins, cream and a proprietary blend of natural flavors. McDonald's is currently in discussions with the State of Vermont to ensure that we meet any applicable state standards."
