June 4, 2010
LOS ANGELES— Herbalife Ltd. signed a three-year, multi-million dollar agreement with FC Barcelona to become the official Nutrition Sponsor for the football team; Leo Messi, the star striker for FC Barcelona, also signed a personal sponsorship agreement with Herbalife. Under terms of the contract, Herbalife acquires global association and publicity rights to promote FC Barcelona, and will have a strong presence in the team’s pre-season games and international tours. Doctors and nutrition experts from Herbalife’s Nutrition Advisory Board will also meet with members of the first team to develop individual nutrition plans.
A percentage of the team sponsorship fee will be paid to the FCB Foundation, which works through its XICS Centres to help children at risk. The agreement with Messi also outlines a collaboration between the Herbalife Family Foundation and the Leo Messi Foundation to develop programs in nutritional health and education. Messi said, “Together, we can help spread the word about how healthy nutrition can help athletes achieve the most out of their training, while at the same time, work together on projects to help children at risk.”
Herbalife sponsors a number of other leading football teams, including the LA Galaxy, Inter Milan FC, Valencia CF, Schalke04 in Germany, Pumas of Mexico and Brazil’s Santos, as well as the U.S. American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO).
