HBO recently aired an episode of “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” that attacked several aspects of the supplement industry. DMAA, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), and Senator Orrin Hatch all faced scrutiny during the episode. “Real Sports” reporter Soledad O’Brien brought up adverse events associated with DMAA, an amphetamine derivative, including the deaths of otherwise healthy U.S. soldiers in previous years. However, O’Brien did not mention the industry’s stance on DMAA, including support for FDA’s removal of the dangerous ingredient from the market in 2012. Through this topic and several others, HBO’s programming certainly painted the dietary supplement industry in a negative light; however, the team at Natural Products INSIDER will continue to deliver truthful content about our industry and what it’s doing to ensure supplement safety.
