Omega-3 Insights Magazine: Krill
The Antarctic krill fishery is thought to be one of the most sustainably and conservatively managed fisheries in the world. Only a limited number of fishing vessels and portion of Area 48 are authorized for commercial krill harvesting. Strict monitoring of the biomass, as well as the efforts to reduce by-catch, contribute to the tight management. As such, the entire krill fishery is harvesting approximately only one-third of 1 percent of the available krill in the area. Takeaways include: *Antarctic krill represent a huge biomass, actively fished but well protected and managed by CCAMLR. *On-board international observers, GPS technology and real-time monitoring assure minimal by-catch. *In a health practitioner survey, 65% of respondents recommended krill oil at least occasionally.
