CRN, EFA Producers Form Omega-3 Subcommittee

SECAUCUS, N.J.--The second meeting of the CRN Omega-3 Subcommittee will be held here during SupplySide East in May. The Council for Responsible Nutrition(CRN) will handle administration and communication issues for the newly-formed committee, which held its first meeting at Natural Products Expo West in March. The meeting
was called by Jostein Refsens, Pronova, and Robert Orr, Ocean Nutrition Canada.
A number of producers of essential fatty acids (EFAs) came together to form the committee to address various issues in the market. It hopes to define quality standards for long chain Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids(LCPUFAs) and to increase the market for the products. Three committees have been formed to coordinate the activities of the group: Steering Committee, chaired by Orr; Technical Committee, chaired by Sam Zeller,Omegatech; and Nomenclature Committee, chaired by Barbara Apps, ERBL/Coromega.
Abroad range of companies that supply Omega-3 EFAs were represented at the Expo West meeting, and several will be exhibiting at the upcoming SupplySide East show.
