McDonald's Video Debunks 'Pink Goop' Rumor

TORONTOMcDonald's Canada published a video last week giving consumers an insider's peek at how its Chicken McNuggets are made, specifically to show consumers the nuggets contain no "pink goop."

A photo of a pink-slime substance went viral last year, with accusations that the slime was used by McDonald's to make its Chicken McNuggets. McDonald's addressed the issue on its website, in a response that said, "A photo circulating online does not show how we make Chicken McNuggets or, frankly, any item on our menu. Our Chicken McNuggets are made using USDA inspected boneless white breast meat chicken. We do not use the process known as mechanically separated chicken, nor do our Chicken McNuggets ever at any point, look like this photo."

To further remedy the issue, the company journeyed to the Cargill facility in London where the McNuggets are manufactured, and filmed the process step-by-step. In the video, published Jan. 31, whole chicken breasts are dumped into grinders, then shaped, breaded, fried and packagedno "goop" included.

According to McDonald's Canada's ingredient list, the McNuggets are made with chicken breast, water, salt, seasoning, modified corn starch and rosemary extract, and then breaded with water, yellow corn flour, wheat flour modified corn starch, spices, salt, baking powder, dextrose, wheat starch corn starch and hydrogenated soybean oil.

Earlier this year, the company announced plans to fulfill its goal to purchase verified sustainable beef in 2016.

McDonald's began collaborating with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Cargill, JBS and others in 2011 to develop the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB). GRSB established guiding principles and practices for sustainable beef, which, according to a statement on McDonald's website, is a first for the industry.
