DSM ~ Tolerase L

HEERLEN, NetherlandsDSM is extending its enzyme expertise into the dietary supplement market with the launch of Tolerase L, a digestive aid for people who suffer from lactose intolerance. Tolerase L is an acid lactase that converts lactose into glucose and galactose. It acts at a low pH (optimal activity from 3.5 to 5.5) to digest lactose in the stomach and relieve symptoms associated with lactose intolerance such as bloating, gas and abdominal cramps. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) released a positive opinion on acid lactase, concluding that that lactase enzyme contributes to breaking down lactose.

DSM already has an extensive global presence in the food enzyme business. In March of this year, DSM Food Specialties acquired Verenium, a supplier of high-performance enzyme products. At that time, Hans-Christian Ambjerg, president DSM Food Specialties, commented: "For DSM Food Specialties this acquisition is a great step in achieving our ambitious growth strategy as we expand our enzymes business beyond our current applications."
