Developing heart health supplements

Many factors are involved with heart health for any given individual; it can be confusing to pinpoint which nutrients will most effectively support ongoing heart health. The market is crowded with heart health products that have different modes of action, which can be complex for the consumer to understand.

Whether the consumer is proactively seeking to protect cardiovascular health or has already experienced cardiovascular issues, knowing which ingredients most directly target key areas, such as blood vessels, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, heart rhythms and the heart structure itself, is essential.

With prevention being the foundation for good health, factors that are increasingly important to the consumer are healthy aging and an active lifestyle, and heart health plays a big role. The 2017 market research report by Global Industry Analysts projected the global market for heart health ingredients to reach US$23 billion by 2022. This could be due to the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) as the leading cause of death, as well as an increase in consumers taking more preventive measures.

The major concerns for consumers related to heart and cardiovascular health include balancing blood lipids, maintaining healthy weight and blood sugar, strengthening the heart, and supporting circulation to the brain and extremities.

It is now understood that targeted nutritional supplementation works very well in tandem with medications to maintain and support cardiovascular health, along with a healthy diet and exercise program. While there has been an emphasis on cholesterol reduction in the past 15 to 20 years, more recent focus has been on additional factors that reduce inflammation and balance blood-sugar and hormone levels.
