Beta-glucans
Consumers across America have countless options for managing cholesterol, but most turn first and foremost to oats, thanks to the 1997 FDA-approved health claim: “Foods containing soluble fiber from whole oats (oat bran, oat flour and rolled oats), in conjunction with a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.” Researchers believe beta-glucans decrease the absorption or reabsorption of fats, including cholesterol and bile acid, according to Sandy Chien, Ph.D., vice president of innovative products, HORN Nutraceuticals.
