If the eyes are the windows to the soul, the inner spirit may need some yellow shades. Potentially damaging blue light was once only a problem for eyes subject to sun overexposure, but modern eyes are bombarded by blue light from endless device screens at all hours of the day and night—device screens mix blue and yellow light to make white backgrounds for better contrast. The yellow pigmented macula in the back of the eye can protect against blue light, the effects from which accumulate throughout life, but the nutritional foundation for the macula in the modern diet—the carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin from spinach and other green leafy vegetables—has not kept pace with the soaring blue light exposure.

- How supplementation can correct carotenoid deficiencies common in modern diets, especially among the college-age subject population of some of his team’s recent studies.
- The findings of his latest research on visual performance, showing supplementation with lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin protects the eyes from blue light exposure from increasing screen time.
- How yellow pigmented carotenoids can “clean up” oxidative stress in the eye as well as a filter to not only increase macular pigment but improve eye fatigue, squinting, headache frequency and sleep problems.
