HELSINKI, Finland--Antioxidants do not appear to help with exercise when someone is sick with a cold. In the November edition of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise (35, 11:1815-20, 2003) (, researchers evaluated the immunocompetence of male smokers during exposures to the common cold. It appeared that vitamin E nor beta-carotene reduced the risk of the common cold and, in fact, increased the risk when coupled with heavy exercise.
