FDA Taking Public Comment on Study about Oil Health Claims

WASHINGTON

The Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) opened a public comment period seeking input on a voluntaryexperimental study of consumer inferences about qualified health claims foromega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids from oliveoil. The notice was published in the March 29 FederalRegister and will remain open through the end of May.It is a follow-up to issues of enforcement discretion issued by FDA(www.fda.gov) in the fall of 2004 relating to the reduction of coronary heartdisease risk from the consumption of monounsaturated fatty acids from olive oiland omega-3 EFAs. The study proposed in the new notice is part of an ongoingeffort by FDA to collect data on qualified health claims and their impact onconsumer behavior and perceptions.
