SuperUlam Shown to Support Cognitive Function and Mood

LOS ANGELESA new study showed the benefits of SuperUlam (by Biotropics Malaysia Berhad) on supporting concentration, mood and memory (Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2013;2013:238454. Epub 2013 Nov 28). SuperUlam is a blend of natural ingredients aimed at supporting brain health. The study was intended to evaluate the effect of SuperUlam on attention and mood in healthy adults.

SuperUlam is a proprietary mixture of extracts from plants shown in laboratory research or traditional use to improve concentration, mood, and/or energy as well as vitamins C and E. Extracts of sireh (Piper betle), turmeric (Curcuma longa), pegaga (Centellaasiatica), curry leaf (Murrayakoenigii), selasih (Ocimumbasilicum), kesum (Polygonum minus) and ulam raja (Cosmos caudatus) are included.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study,  included 20 healthy participants between the ages of 35 and 65. The study lasted three weeks, with a total of three visits per participant. Measurement of cognitive function included computer-based testing of reaction time, complex attention, working memory, sustained attention and executive functioning. Mood testing was performed through the profile of mood states (POMS) survey and the Chalder fatigue scale.

Cognitive function testing showed a significant improvement from the baseline measurements in executive functioning, cognitive flexibility, reaction time and working memory in the SuperUlam group only. When comparing the SuperUlam group to the placebo group, the data demonstrated a significant decrease in tension, depression and anger. There was no significant difference between SuperUlam and placebo in the other measures of mood, including vigor, fatigue, confusion and total mood disturbance. No adverse side affects were reported by participants, concluding that SuperUlam is safe to consume with potential benefits to cognitive function and mood. The study was conducted by Medicus Research, a U.S.-based contract research organization, known for its work in the natural health products industries.
