Prebiotics for Digestion

Article

by Courtney Johnson -

Dealing with digestive and gastrointestinal disorders can be painful and uncomfortable; due to this, consumers seek to ease their symptoms with natural ingredients, contributing to market growth for digestive health. “Consumers’ interest in products for digestive health has grown fast in recent years and this growth is likely to continue," Cosimo Palumbo, sales area manager in North America for Indena S.p.A. explained.

Jon Peters, president of BENEO Inc. added, “consumer research shows that digestive health is an ongoing trend in the United States, with 61 percent of U.S. consumers concerned about maintaining digestive health and 43 percent looking for products to actively improve digestive health." Peters explained the HealthFocus International 2015 found claims such as “natural keeps your digestive system healthy," and “supports your body to maintain its normal digestive processes in a natural way," are popular among consumers.

Peters noted a study that suggested prebiotic chicory inulin and oligofructose to support normal bowel habits in children between the ages of two to five years old.  Results showed that the chicory root fibers softened the stools of the constipated children and were as well tolerated as the fully digestible placebo, according to Peters (Closa-Monasterolo, R. et al. International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, 1–11). In addition, a study found chicory root inulin improved bowel function in adults, contributing to improved digestive health (Micka A. et al. International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition. 2016).

“Due to the convergence of a series of lifestyle and market trends, digestive health has moved from being a medically-driven topic to a wellness-driven consideration in a growing number of consumers’ minds," Peters added.
