IN-Ingredients Releases New CLOCK Clinical Study

Press Release

In a new clinical study, men and women who took CLOCK® a proprietary blend of Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and Daylily (Hemerocallis fulva) extracts before bed time, saw significant increases in several key factors that support cognitive brain function and other benefits related to sleep. The study was completed in cooperation between IN Ingredients, the University of Memphis and the University of Maryland. Results of the study have been published in the Journal of Alternative, Complementary and Integrative Medicine

CLOCK® was first studied in laboratory work performed by Dr. Bolin Qin at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, in conjunction with Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center. CLOCK® demonstrated to help regulate the expression of circadian clock proteins in C6 animal brain glioma and IPEC-1 cells. From this point, an In-House pilot study was performed showing promising effects related to improved sleep and mood. This data led to the University of Memphis conducting 2 double blind, placebo controlled studies in men and women. The first study was published in 2016 while the second study published in 2017, includes a crossover design. "The research results from both studies demonstrate the positive effects CLOCK® has on key brain cognitive function markers such as BDNF, acetylcholine, choline and irisin. In addition, CLOCK® significantly increased melatonin, the "sleep hormone." When melatonin rises it is beneficial to the quality of sleep." said Judi Q. Timmcke, VP of Product

Development for IN Ingredients. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is an important neurotrophin that circulates in the plasma and operates in major regions of the central nervous system and influences brain function. It is involved in various neuronal systems and is involved in neuronal plasticity. Increased levels have been shown to improve mood and support cognitive function. Both studies show CLOCK® significantly increases BDNF, which is important and may help to improve cognitive function.

Irisin is a newly discovered hormone. Increased levels are correlated with improved cognition and slowing down the aging process. Acetylcholine is a brain neurotransmitter and it’s precursor choline, are critically important in cognitive function and sleep. With aging acetylcholine is believed to decline, reducing cognitive function. BDNF and irisin also decline with age.

CLOCK® is currently available for use in dietary supplement formulations.
