Description:
Join this Webinar to learn more about the fundamental elements of nutrition relating to eye and systemic health. In this Webinar, Dr. Richer will:

  1. Examine how the standard American diet is one of caloric abundance, micronutrient deficiencies and problematic additives
  2. Explore the potential to delay the onset of age-related disease
  3. Reinforce the application of the 2005 USDA Food Pyramid www.MyPyramid.gov guidelines and Medicare PQRI incentives for including supplemental vitamins/minerals in optometry practices
  4. Discuss how certain pharmaceuticals induce nutritional deficits and how interactions with medications and supplementation side effects are possible, but rare
  5. Review how preventive medicine also encompasses non-nutritional elements such as stress reduction and exercise.

Speaker:
Stuart Richer, OD, Ph.D., FAAO, earned his undergraduate degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology, completed a dual doctorate of optometry and master’s degree (physiological optics) program at the University of California at Berkeley and earned his doctorate in human physiology and biophysics from Chicago Medical School. He is Chief of Optometry at DVA Medical Center in Chicago and an associate professor of Family and Preventative Medicine at Chicago Medical School and Clinical Optometry at ICO and UMSL.

He is the principal investigator of the Veterans Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trial (LAST), the first U.S. randomized double-masked placebo controlled clinical trial of lutein and visual function published in the journal Optometry. He is a fellow in the National Academy of Practices in Medicine and his team was announced as Service to America Medal finalists in Science and Technology at the U.S. Senate Hart Bldg.

Actively involved in primary care optometry and clinical antioxidant research, Richer has special interests in aging, prescribing nutrients in the intervention of age related macular degeneration, low-tension glaucoma, prevention of cataracts and dry eye.
